When should you attempt the repair yourself?

If the scratch looks to be white, then the chances are that it hasn't penetrated through the clear coat of paint on top of your colour, this is relatively easy to fix, other problems are more difficult and should be determined by your confidence. You also need to ensure that you have the right environment in which to make the scratch repair. Indoors is best and you need a reasonably warm temperature, 70 to 85 degrees F is ideal and being away from wind or sun is a must. You don’t want to be working in an environment where condensation is produced as moisture on the car can affect the paint finish.

What tools will you need?

Depending on the depth of your car scratch, you will need all or some of the following products, a good car shampoo, polish, 1,500 grit sandpaper, primer, paint (colour can be checked in the owners manual to ensure you use the correct paint code) and wax.

How to correct the problem

Clean the surrounding surface first to remove any dirt, ensure this is thoroughly dry before you move on. Using the sandpaper, carefully begin to sand the damaged area, only press lightly to ensure you have good control. If the scratch is up to the primer, apply a fresh coat of primer to the area and allow to dry overnight. When it comes to applying the paint, be sure to shake well first and follow the manufacturers instructions, which can vary slightly. When doing this, be careful to ensure that the new coat is level with the rest of the car. Again, allow this to dry, preferably overnight and apply the clear coat of paint to the top. Once the paint has completely settled, wet sand the area to make sure that it blends with the rest of the car and apply a polish. A wax finish will add extra protection to the new paintwork if required.

When attempting to fix a car scratch yourself, the key is to be patient, the drying in between stages can feel unnecessary but will ultimately produce the best finish. Don’t be tempted to leave a scratch unattended, as this can lead to rust and a bigger problem for yourself in the future.

Furthermore, the position in which the guard is mounted is far enough away from the cab’s OEM components that it’s simple to clean the cab, including its windows.

Operator protection. When a contractor installs an ROPS guard on some excavator cab models, the weight of the guard can make it impossible to open or close the cab door when the machine is on an incline. Consequently, the operator is at a greater safety risk if the machine rolls over because he may be thrown from the machine if the door cannot close, or he may not be able to escape if the door cannot open. When you build a custom cab guard with no moving parts, the guard’s weight doesn’t pose such a risk. 

Light protection. When industrial demolition contractors build custom excavator cab guards, they usually build a component that protects the OEM lights. The guarding mount gets reinforced to increase its effectiveness.

Side protection. To increase the safety of a cab’s sides, Elder Demolition adds an 8-inch rolled catwalk that’s 3/8 inch thick from one side of the counterweight to the other. This addition protects the operator and lower part of the machine from side impacts.

Protection for internal components. We replace the OEM paneling with 3/8-inch steel plating that’s cut to match the mounting points and stock sight lines, and we use ¼-inch steel to reinforce the mounting points. To handle the increase in weight, our technicians reinforce the hinges and brackets or replace them with heavy-duty components. The new plating circles the machine, protecting the hydraulic tank, radiators and motor compartment.

• Consider Drop Length – The drop length is probably the most neglected part about tarps.  Securely fastening the lumber is one thing, but if you have a drop that is too low it is not reinforcing the lumber.  If nothing else, a longer drop means that the elements will not affect the lumber making it a hazard on the road.  Extra length means extra protection in most cases.
• Reinforcements – Depending on how large the lumber is, adding an extra tarp to the cause is not a bad idea.  Overlapping or overlaying an extra tarp on the other is a common practice that has proven to secure tightly and protect the tarp. 

Note that the tarps themselves have to be securely fastened by ratchet straps or bungee cords.  If that is not secure then the application of the lumber tarps are futile.  There are several tarps that are available depending on the size of the load.  It’s never a bad idea to have a number of tarps available just to be sure.  Unfortunately just having straps isn’t enough.  Seasoned truckers will tell you that driving in the elements present several challenges with heightened exposure to the dark. Open and exposed lumber is a dangerous thing even if you are driving only a few miles away. 

Fortunately not many accidents have occurred in recent years regarding lumber transportation accidents.  Some lumber providers drive a few miles while others drive a few states away.  The risk is far greater not having adequate logistics involved.

I did, on two fingers the other day, I was putting in a clutch pack with another mechanic, something I rarely do, I usually do it by myself, but on this day I was helping someone else, and gotten my fingers pinched between the pack and the bell housing. You don't realize how heavy they are until you have 150 lbs pinching your fingers between metal. OUCH! Anyway after getting my fingers out, I had the most ridiculous pain I've ever experienced in my finger tips, they were not bleeding externally, but I could see the blood filling underneath my finger nails. I left it alone, and considered going to the hospital, but didn't. Two days passed, and these two fingers, looked like water balloons, and still throbbed with every beat of my heart. A co worker of mine, saw them and said, "Get a hot pin, and relieve the blood. This sounded kind of barbaric and painful, but he was right, I needed to relieve the pressure, so thinking about it, and what would be less painful, I decided a 1/16 th drill bit. (PURCHASED NEW FOR THE OCCASSION) Rubbing alcohol, to clean this drill bit, and then slowly but surely just twisting the drill bit over the dark red, blood spot, I successfully allowed the blood to drain out from under my finger nails. My fingers, are a little sore, but relatively doing much better. I can type again. I can properly hold a pen too. So I would consider this minor operation a success. I'm not sure doctor's agree with me, however, doctor's at the hospital would have much better things to do then remove the blood from under my fingernails. 

As for keeping out infection, I've just been using polysporin and bandaids. Maybe this may help someone out there who wishes for the same relief..
