Job Description

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Diagnose, repair, and test diesel engines, air brakes, suspensions, steering, HVAC, and emissions/aftertreatment systems.
  • Perform preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), safety checks, and road tests; verify repairs to completion.
  • Use OEM software, laptops, and diagnostic tools; read schematics, gauges, ladder logic, and service data.
  • Inspect and service electrical, charging, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems; repair wiring, connectors, and harnesses.
  • Document work orders accurately; maintain shop cleanliness, tooling, and parts accountability.
  • Follow DOT, safety, and agency procedures; support 24/7 operations with flexibility for rotating shifts or reassignments.
  • Collaborate with foreman and peers; mentor or assist other technicians as needed.

 

Requirements:

  • Required:

    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • Minimum 3 years of repair experience on automotive, medium/heavy trucks, or transit/school buses.
    • Valid Texas CDL with “P” endorsement (or ability to obtain within 90 days) and acceptable MVR; able to operate agency vehicles.
    • Proficiency with electronic diagnostics, scan tools, gauges, and basic computer/laptop-based troubleshooting.
    • Ability to read/write English; complete repair reports and forms accurately.
    • Provide and maintain basic personal hand tools; use shop specialty tools safely.
    • Pass DOT physical, drug/alcohol screening, and background check; commit to strict safety practices.
    • Flexibility to work various shifts, overtime, weekends, and holidays as assigned.
  • Preferred:

    • Technical school training in diesel, heavy equipment, or automotive technology.
    • ASE certifications in brakes, electrical, steering/suspension, or PMI; HVAC certification/experience on bus A/C systems.
    • Experience with emissions aftertreatment, multiplex wiring, and laptop-based OEM diagnostics on transit fleets.

Shifts

  • Transit operations run 24/7, including weekends and holidays.

  • Day, afternoon, and overnight shifts are available based on operational needs.

  • Mechanics must be flexible, as shift assignments may vary and change as required.

    • Standard workweek is 40 hours, with 8-hour shifts.

    • Overtime is paid after 8 hours per day.

Compensation

  • $29.00 – $32.85/hr based on experience and classification.

    • Class A Mechanics start at $32.85/hr.

    • Class B Mechanics start at $29.20/hr with wage progression every six months (excluding training).

  • Newly hired mechanics in qualifying roles may earn up to $6,000 in incentive pay (contingent on requirements).

  • Additional pay available for evening, night, and weekend shifts.
