I heard a story once that a guy had his D-7 stuck (or at least in a sticky possition) and with no winch , he tried a different aproach .

Did not see it personally

He took a long heavy duty chain (or chains) and tied one end around a large tree , and the other end , hooked on one of the tracks and used his track as a winch and backed the D-7 out of trouble .

Has anyone of yall done/tried this ?

Sounds lodgical , but , What do you think ?

I have saw my father do something simmilar with his two wheel drive farm tractor. He had a hill to climb once when he was hauling logs and could not get up there. He had tire chains on the rear tires so he tied a long rope up the hill on a tree and the other end in the center of a chain bar, locked the differential lock and it pulled the tractor up the hill.My dad always jokes how he got his old tractor to walk tightrope,so its possible to do those things.

We do that with our equipment all the time i am sure it is not in any safe work practices but you have to do what you have to do. i have done that to get a piece of equipment on a trailer before. The trucker thought i was nuts.
