A well-established freight railroad company is hiring a Diesel Locomotive Mechanic in Canaan, CT, to inspect, maintain, and repair diesel-electric locomotives and rail equipment. Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform daily inspections, servicing, and preventative maintenance on diesel-electric locomotives
- Fuel units; check and change oils, fluids, and filters for engines, air compressors, and related systems
- Diagnose and repair diesel engine, electrical/control, air/brake, and mechanical system issues
- Repair, rewire, and replace defective components, including motors, brakes, couplers, and electrical systems
- Replace major locomotive and diesel engine components such as wheels, traction motors, couplers, gear cases, cylinder heads, air compressors, and turbochargers
- Inspect parts for wear or defects and interpret test instruments and indicators
- Support restoration, refurbishment, and rehabilitation of railroad equipment
- Perform emergency repairs to return locomotives to safe service
- Operate power and hydraulic tools while working outdoors, in confined spaces, and at heights
- Comply with all railroad safety rules and FRA standards
Requirements

Required:
- Experience as a diesel or locomotive mechanic, including electrical repairs
- Ability to diagnose, repair, and replace mechanical, electrical, and air system components
- Knowledge of railroad safety rules and FRA compliance requirements
- Welding and cutting torch experience
- Ability to perform emergency repairs
- Must supply own basic tools
- Willingness to complete annual training and pass safety rules examinations
- Ability to pass pre-employment background screening and post-offer medical exam, including drug and physical capability testing

Preferred:
- Diesel-electric mechanical repair experience with railroad equipment
- Senior-level locomotive mechanic experience

$33.00 – $40.00/hr to start, based on experience, certifications, and training

The Housatonic Railroad is a short-line railroad that has a north-south line from Pittsfield, MA to Danbury, CT and east-west from Danbury to Derby over 125-mile of track. We interchange with CSX in Pittsfield, MA and operate 6 days a week hauling freight.
