A well-established freight railroad company is hiring a Diesel Locomotive Mechanic in Canaan, CT, to inspect, maintain, and repair diesel-electric locomotives and rail equipment. Duties & Responsibilities

• Perform daily inspections, servicing, and preventative maintenance on diesel-electric locomotives
• Fuel units; check and change oils, fluids, and filters for engines, air compressors, and related systems
• Diagnose and repair diesel engine, electrical/control, air/brake, and mechanical system issues
• Repair, rewire, and replace defective components, including motors, brakes, couplers, and electrical systems
• Replace major locomotive and diesel engine components such as wheels, traction motors, couplers, gear cases, cylinder heads, air compressors, and turbochargers
• Inspect parts for wear or defects and interpret test instruments and indicators
• Support restoration, refurbishment, and rehabilitation of railroad equipment
• Perform emergency repairs to return locomotives to safe service
• Operate power and hydraulic tools while working outdoors, in confined spaces, and at heights
• Comply with all railroad safety rules and FRA standards

Requirements

• Required:

  • Experience as a diesel or locomotive mechanic, including electrical repairs
  • Ability to diagnose, repair, and replace mechanical, electrical, and air system components
  • Knowledge of railroad safety rules and FRA compliance requirements
  • Welding and cutting torch experience
  • Ability to perform emergency repairs
  • Must supply own basic tools
  • Willingness to complete annual training and pass safety rules examinations
  • Ability to pass pre-employment background screening and post-offer medical exam, including drug and physical capability testing

• Preferred:

  • Diesel-electric mechanical repair experience with railroad equipment
  • Senior-level locomotive mechanic experience
