Heavy Equipment Field Mechanic
Job Description
An established heavy construction fleet is hiring a Heavy Equipment Field Mechanic in Chatham, VA to maintain and repair equipment across regional projects. Ideal candidates have strong hydraulic, electrical, and diagnostic experience and can work independently. Duties & Responsibilities
- Diagnose and repair hydraulic, electrical, engine, drivetrain, and undercarriage issues in the field
- Maintain excavators, dozers, articulated trucks, loaders, skid steers, dump trucks, pickups, hydroseeders, and support equipment
- Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, testing, and repairs to minimize equipment downtime
- Troubleshoot equipment issues accurately and complete quality repairs without unnecessary parts replacement
- Maintain accurate repair documentation and communicate equipment condition and completed work
- Keep the company-provided service truck clean and organized while following safe work practices
Requirements
- Required:
-
- Hands-on experience repairing heavy construction equipment and diesel-powered trucks or similar machinery
- Experience with Caterpillar, Komatsu, Peterbilt, Mack, or comparable equipment and vehicles
- Strong ability to diagnose and troubleshoot hydraulic, electrical, engine, drivetrain, and mechanical systems
- Ability to complete field repairs independently with minimal supervision
- Must provide personal mechanic’s tools
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record and ability to travel throughout Southern Virginia, Southern West Virginia, and nearby project areas
- Dependable, self-motivated work habits and a strong commitment to quality repairs

- 5+ years of heavy equipment mechanic experience
- Welding and fabrication experience
- Commercial Driver’s License

Shifts
- Day shift, Monday to Friday

- Monday: 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM
- Tuesday to Thursday: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM
- Friday: 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM
- Schedule may vary by project location
Compensation
- $30.00 – $35.00/hour based on experience
- Company-provided service truck
- Health insurance available
- $115/day per diem, Monday through Thursday
- $200 monthly tool allowance
- Company-paid replacement of work-related tools that are broken or damaged
- Typically 50–60 hours per week with full-time, year-round work
