Job Description

Seeking an experienced Equipment Mechanic II in Chico, CA to make minor and major mechanical repairs to City equipment, including a lead role in night or day shifts in the shop. Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide lead guidance and inspect, diagnose, and repair City automobiles, trucks, fire apparatus, and a variety of maintenance and construction equipment.
  • Perform engine overhauls, tune-ups, and replace or repair faulty parts like wheel bearings, clutches, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, and more.
  • Oversee and manage a continual inspection program and maintain work, time, and material records.
  • Fabricate and modify parts as necessary and manage inventory of frequently used items.
  • Maintain shop cleanliness, including cleaning equipment, sweeping, and washing motorized equipment.

 

Requirements:

  • Proficient with tools, equipment, and procedures used in the overhaul, repair, and adjustment of gas and diesel-powered equipment.
  • Skilled in the use of automotive shop tools and methods used in welding.
  • Strong understanding of the operating and repair characteristics of a wide range of light and heavy City-owned equipment.
  • Ability to perform both minor and major mechanical repairs independently.
  • Excellent diagnostic skills to locate difficulties and determine the extent of necessary repairs.
  • Effective in training and supervising less experienced personnel and working effectively without direct supervision.
  • Pre-employment background, physical examination, and LiveScan screening required.

 

Education and Experience:

  • Specialized training in the maintenance and repair of gas and diesel-powered equipment; specialized fire vehicle training is a plus.
  • Two years of experience at a level similar to Equipment Mechanic I within the City of Chico or four years as a journey-level mechanic.

 

Licenses:

  • Valid California Class C Driver License is required.
  • Valid California Class A Driver License, with airbrake and tanker endorsements, preferred.
  • ASE Master certification in Automotive or Medium/Heavy Truck required within twelve months of hire.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent use of hands, reaching with hands and arms, and performing physically strenuous work.
  • Occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Must frequently lift/move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift up to 100 pounds.

Shifts

  • Schedule is 9/80, meaning 9 days each two week schedule for a total of 80 hours.

Compensation

  • $29.91 – $40.08 Hourly based on previous experience, certifications, and training
