Job Description

Join a dedicated service department as a Mechanic Technician/Apprentice in Derwood, MD and become a pivotal member of our team, focusing on the maintenance and repair of a diverse fleet of heavy-duty vehicles, diesel, and alternative fuel buses. Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Perform skilled mechanical work on a wide range of vehicles including transit buses, light, medium, and heavy-duty trucks, and specialized equipment like street sweepers and excavators.
  • Undertake comprehensive vehicle inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs, documenting all tasks and parts used.
  • Work in various settings including maintenance facilities and field locations, adapting to different environmental conditions and performing physically demanding tasks.
  • Maintain adherence to safety standards and regulatory compliance across all operations.
  • Participate in a rotating shift schedule, which may include nights, weekends, and emergency call-outs as an Essential Employee.

 

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; further technical training or apprenticeship in automotive/mechanical maintenance preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in vehicle maintenance and repair.
  • Strong capabilities in handling physical demands of the job, including lifting up to 100 pounds.
  • Valid driver’s license required; CDL with endorsements preferred upon hiring, mandatory after probation.
  • Required certifications: EPA Air Conditioning, OSHA Forklift Operation, with additional certifications expected post-probation.
  • Proficiency with mechanical tools and diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with effective communication skills.

Special Requirements:

  • Completion of a probationary period and ongoing training as part of the Fleet Management Services Mechanic Technician Training Program.
  • Successful candidates must pass a medical examination and drug/alcohol screening.
  • Have their own set of tools to perform expected job duties.
  • The Division of Fleet Management Services has three main worksite locations (Rockville, Silver Spring and Kensington), and the employee will work on specific shifts to be assigned, based on a 24/7 hour operation. Shifts may include nights and weekends and are subject to change based on training/operational requirements.

Compensation

  • $22/hr to $40/hr ($46,387 – $83,754 expected annual earnings) based on experience and qualifications
