Job Description
Join a dynamic team as an Equipment Mechanic I/II in San Jose, CA, where you’ll play a critical role in maintaining and repairing gasoline, diesel-powered, and alternative technology vehicles, as well as heavy and light construction equipment. Responsibilities:
- Perform preventative maintenance, safety inspections, and repairs on gasoline, diesel-powered, and alternative-fuel vehicles, as well as construction equipment.
- Troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems using diagnostic tools and service manuals.
- Repair or replace components such as engines, transmissions, clutches, brakes, suspensions, and electronic systems.
- Conduct safety inspections, road tests, and ensure compliance with state regulations, including annual California State inspections.
- Perform welding, fabrication, and minor repairs to vehicle components and equipment attachments.
- Maintain detailed maintenance records using Maximo or similar tracking software.
- Occasionally provide on-site service at remote locations or worksites.
- Install and repair specialized vehicle equipment, such as body up-fits, lighting, and instrument panels.
Requirements:
For Equipment Mechanic I:
- At least 1 year of experience in vehicle or mechanical equipment maintenance and repair.
- High school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by specialized training in equipment repair or mechanics.
For Equipment Mechanic II:
- 3 years of experience in vehicle or mechanical equipment maintenance and repair.
- High school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by specialized training in equipment repair or mechanics.
- Valid California driver’s license and the ability to obtain a Class A CDL with hazmat, air brakes, and tanker endorsements within six months of hire.
- Valid ASE Master Technician Certification in Medium & Heavy Truck or Automobile.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Hands-on experience maintaining and repairing medium and heavy trucks, construction equipment, and gas/diesel-powered machinery.
- Proficiency in troubleshooting fuel, ignition, electrical, hydraulic, and braking systems.
- Familiarity with diagnostic tools, technical schematics, and repair manuals.
- Welding and fabrication skills for routine repairs and component replacement.
- Strong understanding of safety practices and regulations for vehicle maintenance.
- Experience with Maximo or similar work order software.
Ideal Candidate:
- 1–3+ years of experience in automotive, diesel, or construction equipment repair (5+ years preferred).
- Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong communication skills for following instructions and collaborating with team members.
- Knowledgeable in occupational hazards, safety practices, and industry standards.

Compensation
- $85,841.60 – $109,865.60 Annually ($41/hr to $53/hr)

Facilities & Fleet Unit (Position Code 08)
Valley Water Telework Program: Eligibility for telework will depend on the type of work performed, operational needs, and the ability for the employee to perform the essential functions of their job duties while teleworking. Employment with Valley Water requires employees to live within 150 miles of their primary physical work location located in San Jose, California by their start date.
This position requires the individual to be onsite and is typically not a teleworking position.
