Heavy Equipment Apprenticeship Program Summary:
Apprenticeship training is a traditional system that incorporates a combination of on the job training and periods of technical training at an Institute such as NAIT. The apprentice normally spends ten months of the year at his/her place of employment and two months at NAIT. This combination is time proven; allowing an apprentice to gain practical skills, learn effective behaviour, and relevant technical knowledge.
Length: 8 weeks per period
The Heavy Equipment Industry is very diverse and typically apprentices specialize in a certain field of repair. The major categories being on-highway vehicles and off-highway equipment. On highway industries include fleet transport, logging, oilfield and others. Off highway industries include mining, oilfield construction, logging, civil constuction, ect.
Technical training at NAIT is undertaken in eight-week periods and includes a combination of classroom and shop activities in the labs using common components and machinery. NAIT’s Heavy Equipment staff of 25 has been drawn from several distinct segments of the industry and attempts to educate apprentices in a thorough manner.

NAIT provides all three periods of technical training:
- First Period is eight weeks in length (240 hours).
- Second and Third Period are each six weeks (180 hours).
NAIT provides two methods of obtaining training. One is the normal block release system where the Apprentice attends school full days (six hours) for eight or six weeks depending upon the Period.
The second method is the WATS (Weekly Apprentice Training System). The Apprentice attends one day per week (1:15 to 7:45 p.m.) for forty weeks (First Period) or thirty weeks (Second and Third Period). This system allows students to maintain full employment while attending school. The WATS is especially favourable for those Apprentices who live in close proximity to NAIT.
