Heavy Equipment Program Summary:
In this program, students will learn the basic fundamentals of diesel engines, power trains, electrical systems, hydraulic systems and brake systems. They will also learn the basic principles of welding and be introduced to the metal cutting process.
This program provides students with the training equivalent to the apprenticeship in-school component of Heavy Equipment Basic Level.
Approximately 3-4 years. The Heavy Duty Equipment Technician Apprenticeship is based on competencies through demonstrated skill, rather than a fixed number of hours on the job; however, the benchmark is 6,280 hours, which includes 720 hours of in-class training.
The apprenticeship is completed when the apprentice has achieved competency in all of the on-the-job performance objectives and when the three levels of in-school training have successfully been completed.
Northern College offers the three levels of in-class training needed for this apprenticeship program. Each level is approx. 240 hours in duration. Training is delivered in day release format. (1 day per week for 40 weeks)
