Duties & Responsibilities:
- Perform scheduled preventative maintenance, DOT inspections, and follow-up repairs on light-, medium-, and heavy-duty vehicles.
- Diagnose and repair gas and diesel engines, transmissions, electrical systems, brakes, HVAC, and steering components.
- Conduct inspections using diagnostic tools and test instruments to identify and correct mechanical and electrical issues.
- Road test vehicles to verify repairs and ensure proper performance and safety compliance.
- Manage concurrent tasks, prioritize repairs, and maintain productivity aligned with standard repair times.
- Use hand tools, precision instruments, welding equipment, and lifting devices for equipment maintenance.
- Document repairs, parts used, and diagnostics through repair orders and uploaded images.
- Communicate repair status and estimates with management and obtain necessary parts and purchase orders.
- Maintain compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and internal safety and environmental standards.
- Participate in the apparatus committee to help guide EMS/fire equipment maintenance and specifications.
- Provide emergency on-call support and perform related fleet maintenance duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

Required:
- High school diploma or GED with 2–3 years of experience in automotive or heavy equipment repair.
- Valid driver’s license with clean record.
- Ability to pass a background check and complete a 90-day probationary period.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office, Adobe, and fleet software; strong English communication skills.
- Able to work independently, meet deadlines, and handle physically demanding tasks in varied environments.
- Willing to travel for training and certifications, including EVOC I-IV within 90 days.

Preferred:
- ASE and EVT certifications (T2-T7, A8, L1/L2, F1-F6).
- CDL or ability to obtain.
- Virginia State Inspector’s License and OEM certifications.
- Knowledge of NFPA 1002, 1071, 1901, 1911 standards.

Day shift: Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM.

Occasional emergency on-call availability may be required.

Compensation

$45.00 – $60.00 per hour to start, based on experience, certifications, and training.

The Fire Department is a combined system of county and volunteer companies. Inside this system, Ashburn Volunteer Fire and Rescue (AVFRD) exists as one of the volunteer companies. This department is celebrating 81 years of being in service to the community. The Ashburn Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department is dedicated to safeguarding the lives and property of Ashburn and Loudoun County's residents and visitors through superior fire, rescue, emergency, and medical response services.
AVFRD operates a specialized fire apparatus repair shop. The shop caters to the Ashburn Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, providing reliable maintenance, repair, and upgrade services for fire trucks and related apparatus. There are 25 pieces of apparatus that the facility is responsible for. Operational focus is on safety, compliance, and operational efficiency for all apparatus assets contained within the AVFRD fleet. The operation supports the apparatus for station 6 and station 22.
We're on the lookout for a dedicated Fleet Mechanic to join our dynamic team. This role is critical in maintaining and repairing our volunteer company-owned emergency apparatus, emphasizing the importance of experience with gas and diesel engines (e.g., Cummins), heavy truck mechanics, vehicle electrical systems, troubleshooting, and diagnosis. The Fleet Mechanic is instrumental in the maintenance and repair of a diverse range of vehicles and equipment, ensuring operational readiness and safety. Our fleet includes:
Fire Suppression engines
Ambulances
Aerial ladder trucks
Light Duty Utility Vehicles (pickup & SUVs)
UTV(s)
Various other vital mechanical support equipment
The role demands not just technical expertise in diagnosing and fixing mechanical and electrical issues but also creativity in parts fabrication and a proactive stance on fleet management. You will work from a company-owned, on-site, 3-bay maintenance shop. Candidates are expected to have personal tools, possess or be capable of obtaining ASE or specific Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) Certification(s), a Virginia State Inspector's License, and Emergency Vehicle Operations Certifications I-IV. Comprehensive background checks are a prerequisite for all prospective hires.
