TL;DR How might a non-mechanic go about rebuilding a school bus engine to ensure it works and will run properly?

Hello everyone!

I am trying to learn as much as I can before I make "the plunge." I am going to graduate college at the end of this semester and need to find a place to live that isn't my dorm nor my parents' house. After much research I've decided I want to purchase an old school bus and convert it into a motor home. I know this isn't an RV forum but that's not why I'm here. I was just hoping some more experienced mechanics could point me in the right direction when it comes to making the engine work properly and keeping it in ship shape. I have no experience working on cars and will probably never make much of a hobby out of it, but I think it will be beneficial to know how to rebuild a diesel engine by hand. So, the question is, where should I go to learn how to rebuild a a school bus engine without having to go to mechanic's school? Are there any good resources for this? I looked for step by step guides but couldn't find any which to me was rather odd as I am a Software Engineer and just about everything I do professionally others have already made detailed guides for online.

Thank you all for any help!

Hello, CJ. Need to ask what type of bus are you wanting(brand) IH, Freightliner, Bluebird or Thompson. This will be the deciding factor on what type engine you will get. Then what is your budget want to cover from a IH to a Cat, cost of parts are higher for a Cat engine than a IH. Just saying, and if you want a pusher style bus or conventional style.
