Job Description

Reefer Technician / Maintenance Technician position based in Hempstead, New York. This role involves diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining refrigerated transport equipment (reefer units) in a fast-paced, family-owned service facility. Work includes both shop-based diagnostics and component exchanges, as well as field service calls on customer sites. The position reports to the Service Manager and works within a collaborative team environment focused on quality workmanship and customer satisfaction.

Requirements

Must-haves:
• Mechanically inclined with hands-on problem-solving ability
• 1–2 years of mechanical experience (automotive, heavy-duty truck, or related field)
• Valid, insurable driver's license
• Ability to operate smartphones and tablet-based work order systems
• Comfort working with electrical systems and components
• Reliable and punctual attendance
• Willingness to learn and adapt to reefer-specific systems

Nice-to-haves:
• 3+ years of reefer equipment experience
• Carrier or Thermal King (TK) certifications
• ASE or OEM-level certifications
• Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
• Experience with diagnostic software and cloud-based platforms

Compensation & Benefits

• Wage Range: $25–$50/hour (based on experience level)

• Maintenance Technician: $25–$35/hour
• Experienced Reefer Technician: $40–$50+/hour
  • Overtime: Paid after 40 hours per week; double time for scheduled holidays
  • On-Call Pay: $250 flat call pay per week on rotation; 3-hour minimum per call plus additional hourly pay for work exceeding minimum
  • Health Insurance: Begins after 30–60 days of employment
  • 401(k): Eligible after one year; 3% employer contribution;  profit sharing distributed annually (when applicable)
  • Vacation & Sick Time: 2 weeks vacation + 5 sick days annually
  • Uniforms: Provided
  • Service Vehicle: 14-foot box truck available for field mechanics with appropriate parking

Hours

• Standard Schedule: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday–Friday
• On-Call Rotation: Week-long rotating shifts with sporadic evening/night calls
• Overtime Availability: Variable weekly overtime (0–10+ hours depending on call volume and shop demand)
• Work Environment: Mix of shop-based work (diagnostics, component exchanges, electrical work) and field service calls at customer locations
• Shop Facilities: 6 bays, climate-controlled, well-maintained with proper safety equipment
