Job Description

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and related faults in fleet vehicles and equipment.
  • Repair, maintain, and overhaul light trucks, heavy trucks, specialty equipment, and vehicle components.
  • Fabricate vehicle components and operational features for shop and field use, including custom attachments or modifications.
  • Complete repair documentation, test vehicle performance after service, and ensure compliance with safety and operational standards.
  • Collaborate with team members to prioritize workload, plan maintenance schedules, and support daily shop operations.
  • Use diagnostic equipment, welding and fabrication tools, and standard hand and power tools to perform repairs and modifications.

 

Requirements

  • Required:
    • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
    • 2+ years of hands-on repair experience on automobiles/light trucks, heavy-duty trucks, or heavy equipment.
    • CDL‑B license with air‑brake endorsement (or ability to obtain) upon hire.
    • Demonstrated ability in welding and fabrication of vehicle components.
    • Valid driver’s license and ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting up to 50 lbs, working in confined spaces, stooping, crawling, and exposure to mechanical hazards.
  • Preferred:
    • State of Michigan Mechanic Certification (Master Mechanic – Automobile/Light Truck or Heavy-Duty Truck) with specialties such as hydraulics, water systems, alternative fuel systems, small engines/light equipment, heavy equipment, heavy truck transmission, or fire apparatus.
    • Previous experience in a public-sector or large fleet environment.
    • Proficient in diagnostic software and reading technical manuals or schematics.
    • Strong ability to work independently and as part of a team, with effective communication skills.

Shifts

  • Monday to Friday, 1:00 PM – 9:00 PM (following completion of training)

    • Occasional weekend shifts during winter for snow and ice response

Compensation

  • $32.00 – $33.00/hr based on experience

  • Pay increases based on service time and advancement within a unionized pay structure
